bits and bobs

I have been working on a few little projects this week. It was big daughter's last week at nursery until the Autumn so I made a couple of pouches for her teachers. I think I have at last figured out how to ensure that my zip ends co-operate. It was all a bit down to luck before.

I also had a bit of fun with some triangle scraps and made a little mat thingy (a technical term for something that is not quite a pot holder, mug rug or indeed a frisbee). It is cheery if not perfect!

Stars

Ok, so as well as my love of all things pink I also seem to be developing a slight obsession for stars. I really really really want to make a star quilt. I am sure it is because I have seen some stunning ones about and I want one too!  Anyway, I found this tutorial at Freshly Pieced for a Ribbon Star block. Oh how I heart it! I wanted to see how well I could put the block together so made these two prototypes.

The one with dark centre works well, not so sure on the lighter centre. I think it is the size of the print more than the light colour that isn't working. I haven't decided whether I am going to make it scrappy or whether to go for just solids. I am, however, sure I have just added another quilt to my works in progress!

sweetie blocks

I have been working on my sweetie blocks this week to add to the fabulous blocks made by the We Bee Modern Too ladies. I have a lot of orange and pink ones but really need to add some more green ones.

I seem to have a bit of a thing for pink at the moment, not pale pink but knock your socks off fuchsia. I even bought myself a jacket that colour (honestly it is better than it sounds). Anyway, I digress, but it seems I am being pulled by the pinks and am really struggling with green!

On another subject entirely, we went to the Helsinki Zoo at the weekend. Now, the last time we went it was winter (what were we thinking) and I can honestly say it was the coldest I have ever been in my entire life. To be fair I should have been prepared we were going to see an ice sculpture competition. Well this time it was warm and not only that they were running a sand sculpture competition. I thought you might like to see this.

Who knew you could make such great castles with sand!

At last a finish!

Yippee I have finished my first quilt of the year! The T quilt (I wish I could think of a more imaginative name) is done and in use. According to the girls it is the perfect size for hiding from polar bears. Those pesky polar bears seem to be in our house all the time at the moment!  Honestly, I am just pleased it will be used.

It came together really quickly in the end and I love the texture the quilting has given it.

Quilting

I finally got around to quilting the T quilt this week. I went for an all over squiggle. This was my first go at free motion quilting and in fact my first go at machine quilting anything other than a mini quilt. It took a while to get used to moving the quilt around under the machine but once I got into the flow I really enjoyed it.

Now obviously the stitch length is not perfect all over but by the end I was fairly good. I don't think my 2 year old will care anyway.  Here is a close up of some of it.

Now just the binding to go and I might just get my first quilt finish of the year!
